Overall the image has a grey bleakness, even the sky (which I assume represents freedom) has an oppressive feel to it.
An interesting conceptual piece.

the half-half composition works well for me. and I love the effect of the multiple exposure on the right.

Well actually these were taken by digital camera.. so yeah I used Photoshop to make the reverse thingy...
